I'll be out of town again this weekend, but I think it looks like a blast, I'd love to give it a try. How important is it that you have an old beater bike?
Mallets get swinging and anything can happen. Steels the way to go if you can. You want to be able to beat your wheels up, too (and not have to worry). I have an extra bike that I'll be loading up from now on out. Fakey-fake moustache bars and single speed. It even comes with a cowbell attached to the seat... El Perfecto.

Any goats up for Bike Polo on Sundays? Just show up with a bike... we have the equipment. I'll start bringin' a loaner polo bike, too...
