Riding on borrowed time

So a few months ago I had a little mishap while my bike was on my bike rack. The aftermath was a bruised but not broken frame. Apparently the manufacturer doesn't recommend dropping your bike while going 65 on the interstate.

I've had a few people who get paid to know what they are talking about look at the dent. I've gotten a variety of responses, ranging from "oh geez! That’s not safe!" To "Oh I wouldn't worry about it, I rode on a bike with a crack in it for 5 years". The other day I stumbled upon this on the internet and had visions of a horrible crash.

All I can do now is make sure I always have a camera with me. That way I can capture all of the carnage.

I think that broken frame looks like the guy either plowed into something head first with all his weight on his front wheel or he misjudged a landing and again, plowed into the ground with the front wheel. As long as the dent you have doesn't have any cracks around the edges and doesn't affect the overall straightness of the top tube, I wouldn't worry about it. But what do I know, I'm just a crazy rigid singlespeedster. I'd probably strip down to my underwear and run around in circles waving my hands in the air and screaming jibberish until I fell over. So don't take my word for it.

Looks to me like you might still be able to ride the white bike, just don't try to pedal when turning... Actually there was a young man around here who had a bike smashed worse than that back many years ago, he put a 16 inch BMX wheel on the front and continued to ride it for a long time. It looked really weird, the front wheel was almost underneath him as he rode. He said he had no money for a new bike, and it rode OK, despite its bent frame and forks.
